1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Oh, yes, come and go. What have you got to do?"
2. They went with him to the door and there was his cab waiting, itsred lamps gleaming cheerfully in the shadow.
3. Then he turned and saw the papers. With half a sigh he picked upthe "World."
4. He put his paper down on his knees and gazed idly out of thewindow. He did not propose to lose his temper, but merely to bepersistent and agreeable, and by a few questions bring around amild understanding of some sort.
5. "Well, you have saved me a dreary evening," returned Hurstwood."Good-night."
6. "Oh, a couple of girls over here in Fortieth Street. We couldhave a dandy time. I was just looking for you."

1. "Yes," he replied; "I know how you feel."
2. Hurstwood swallowed something that rose to his throat. Hungerand weakness had made a coward of him.
3. "Well, they were short and wanted me to find them some one. Itold Carrie, and she seems to want to try."
4. "No."
5. On Tuesday it was the same way. He did manage to bring himselfinto the mood to go out to Carrie, but when he got in Ogden Placehe thought he saw a man watching him and went away. He did notgo within a block of the house.
6. He took her hand, feeling in his good-natured egotism that it wasprobably lack of his presence which had made her lonely.

1. On Sunday evening Carrie dined with him at a place he hadselected in East Adams Street, and thereafter they took a cab towhat was then a pleasant evening resort out on Cottage GroveAvenue near 39th Street. In the process of his declaration hesoon realised that Carrie took his love upon a higher basis thanhe had anticipated. She kept him at a distance in a ratherearnest way, and submitted only to those tender tokens ofaffection which better become the inexperienced lover. Hurstwoodsaw that she was not to be possessed for the asking, and deferredpressing his suit too warmly.
2. "She said it was high time."
3. "Look at the copper watchin'."
4. The latter departed, and at one o'clock reappeared, stunninglyarrayed in a dark-blue walking dress, with a nobby hat to match.Carrie had gotten herself up charmingly enough, but this womanpained her by contrast. She seemed to have so many dainty littlethings which Carrie had not. There were trinkets of gold, anelegant green leather purse set with her initials, a fancyhandkerchief, exceedingly rich in design, and the like. Carriefelt that she needed more and better clothes to compare with thiswoman, and that any one looking at the two would pick Mrs. Vancefor her raiment alone. It was a trying, though rather unjustthought, for Carrie had now developed an equally pleasing figure, and had grown in comeliness until she was a thoroughly attractivetype of her colour of beauty. There was some difference in theclothing of the two, both of quality and age, but this differencewas not especially noticeable. It served, however, to augmentCarrie's dissatisfaction with her state.

1. "How did he hurt himself?" she asked--meaning what was the natureof his injuries. Hurstwood understood. He hated to lie any morethan necessary, and yet he wanted no protests until he was out ofdanger.
2. Curiously this idea soon took hold of Hurstwood. His vanishingsum suggested that he would need sustenance. Why could notCarrie assist him a little until he could get something?
3. He took out the drawer again and lifted the bills. They were sosmooth, so compact, so portable. How little they made, afterall. He decided he would take them. Yes, he would. He wouldput them in his pocket. Then he looked at that and saw theywould not go there. His hand satchel! To be sure, his handsatchel. They would go in that--all of it would. No one wouldthink anything of it either. He went into the little office andtook it from the shelf in the corner. Now he set it upon hisdesk and went out toward the safe. For some reason he did notwant to fill it out in the big room.First he brought the bills and then the loose receipts of theday. He would take it all. He put the empty drawers back andpushed the iron door almost to, then stood beside it meditating.
4、 He was beginning to find, in his wretched clothing and meagrestate of body, that people took him for a chronic type of bum andbeggar. Police hustled him along, restaurant and lodginghousekeepers turned him out promptly the moment he had his due;pedestrians waved him off. He found it more and more difficultto get anything from anybody.
5、 Hurstwood, however, read on and on. He did not pay muchattention to Carrie. She fulfilled her household duties and saidlittle to disturb him.

The drummer usually allowed his ardent good-nature to get thebetter of his speech. He really did think that Carrie had actedthis particular scene very well, and he wanted her to repeat itin public. His enthusiasm was due to the mere spirit of theoccasion.

It was with a sense of satisfaction, then, that he saw announcedone morning the return of the Casino Company, "with Miss CarrieMadenda." He had thought of her often enough in days past. Howsuccessful she was--how much money she must have! Even now, however, it took a severe run of ill luck to decide him to appealto her. He was truly hungry before he said:

He came lightly in, thinking to smooth over any feeling thatmight still exist by a kindly word and a ready promise, but Mrs.Hurstwood said nothing. He seated himself in the large chair, stirred lightly in making himself comfortable, opened his paper, and began to read. In a few moments he was smiling merrily overa very comical account of a baseball game which had taken placebetween the Chicago and Detroit teams.
