1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Yes," he said guiltily; "Mrs. Vance."
2. "Yes," he said, as she moved toward the door, "you try thedepartment stores," and off he went.
3. "I couldn't," said Carrie, her colour rising. Then, seeing thathe looked as if he said "I know," she exclaimed: "Oh, all right.I don't care."
4. "Now," he said, getting Carrie and himself comfortably settled,"what will you have?"
5. "She asks only in return," said Carrie, scarcely hearing thesmall, scheduled reply of her lover, and putting herself evenmore in harmony with the plaintive melody now issuing from theorchestra, "that when you look upon her your eyes shall speakdevotion; that when you address her your voice shall be gentle, loving, and kind; that you shall not despise her because shecannot understand all at once your vigorous thoughts andambitious designs; for, when misfortune and evil have defeatedyour greatest purposes, her love remains to console you. Youlook to the trees," she continued, while Hurstwood restrained hisfeelings only by the grimmest repression, "for strength andgrandeur; do not despise the flowers because their fragrance isall they have to give. Remember," she concluded, tenderly, "loveis all a woman has to give," and she laid a strange, sweet accenton the all, "but it is the only thing which God permits us tocarry beyond the grave."
6. On the other hand, his interest in Drouet's little shop-girl grewin an almost evenly balanced proportion. That young lady, underthe stress of her situation and the tutelage of her new friend, changed effectively. She had the aptitude of the struggler whoseeks emancipation. The glow of a more showy life was not lostupon her. She did not grow in knowledge so much as she awakenedin the matter of desire. Mrs. Hale's extended harangues upon thesubjects of wealth and position taught her to distinguish betweendegrees of wealth.Mrs. Hale loved to drive in the afternoon in the sun when it wasfine, and to satisfy her soul with a sight of those mansions andlawns which she could not afford. On the North Side had beenerected a number of elegant mansions along what is now known asthe North Shore Drive. The present lake wall of stone andgranitoid was not then in place, but the road had been well laidout, the intermediate spaces of lawn were lovely to look upon, and the houses were thoroughly new and imposing. When the winterseason had passed and the first fine days of the early springappeared, Mrs. Hale secured a buggy for an afternoon and invitedCarrie. They rode first through Lincoln Park and on far outtowards Evanston, turning back at four and arriving at the northend of the Shore Drive at about five o'clock. At this time ofyear the days are still comparatively short, and the shadows ofthe evening were beginning to settle down upon the great city.Lamps were beginning to burn with that mellow radiance whichseems almost watery and translucent to the eye. There was asoftness in the air which speaks with an infinite delicacy offeeling to the flesh as well as to the soul. Carrie felt that itwas a lovely day. She was ripened by it in spirit for manysuggestions. As they drove along the smooth pavement anoccasional carriage passed. She saw one stop and the footmandismount, opening the door for a gentleman who seemed to beleisurely returning from some afternoon pleasure. Across thebroad lawns, now first freshening into green, she saw lampsfaintly glowing upon rich interiors. Now it was but a chair, nowa table, now an ornate corner, which met her eye, but it appealedto her as almost nothing else could. Such childish fancies asshe had had of fairy palaces and kingly quarters now came back. She imagined that across these richly carved entrance-ways, wherethe globed and crystalled lamps shone upon panelled doors setwith stained and designed panes of glass, was neither care norunsatisfied desire. She was perfectly certain that here washappiness. If she could but stroll up yon broad walk, cross thatrich entrance-way, which to her was of the beauty of a jewel, andsweep in grace and luxury to possession and command--oh! howquickly would sadness flee; how, in an instant, would theheartache end. She gazed and gazed, wondering, delighting, longing, and all the while the siren voice of the unrestful waswhispering in her ear.

1. "Yes, sir," said Carrie.
2. Carrie, coming in from another direction, thought she saw Mrs.Vance going away. She strained her eyes, but could not makesure.
3. "There doesn't seem to be any place. Shaughnessy doesn't wantto."
4. She sat with Minnie, in the kitchen, holding the baby until itbegan to cry. Then she walked and sang to it, until Hanson, disturbed in his reading, came and took it. A pleasant side tohis nature came out here. He was patient. One could see that hewas very much wrapped up in his offspring.
5. "That fixes up nine men for the night," said the captain, counting out as many of the line near him. "Line up over there. Now, then, there are only seven. I need twelve cents."
6. Carrie nodded.

1. "It's you, is it?" she said, and went back.
2. "Oh, yes," he said, "you will feel so much better."
3. She was now one of a group of oriental beauties who, in thesecond act of the comic opera, were paraded by the vizier beforethe new potentate as the treasures of his harem. There was noword assigned to any of them, but on the evening when Hurstwoodwas housing himself in the loft of the street-car barn, theleading comedian and star, feeling exceedingly facetious, said ina profound voice, which created a ripple of laughter:
4. She wavered, totally unable to make a move. Minute after minuteslipped by and still she hesitated, he pleading.
5. He was astonished at the woman's determination, but it onlyirritated him the more.
6. "Well, to-morrow then. I'm living at the Chelsea now."

1. "You won't give it up?" said the man.
2. "I can't promise," she said, doubtfully.
3. As in Chicago, she was seized with stage fright as the very firstentrance of the ballet approached, but later she recovered. Theapparent and painful insignificance of the part took fear awayfrom her. She felt that she was so obscure it did not matter.Fortunately, she did not have to wear tights. A group of twelvewere assigned pretty golden-hued skirts which came only to a lineabout an inch above the knee. Carrie happened to be one of thetwelve.
4、 Carrie felt this as a personal reproof. She read "Dora Thorne,"or had a great deal in the past. It seemed only fair to her, butshe supposed that people thought it very fine. Now this clear-eyed, fine-headed youth, who looked something like a student toher, made fun of it. It was poor to him, not worth reading. Shelooked down, and for the first time felt the pain of notunderstanding.
5、 "I don't seem to have," answered Carrie. "It's about as strangeto me as when I first came here."

{ She had a chic way of tossing her head to one side, and holdingher arms as if for action--not listlessly. In front of the linethis showed up even more effectually.

      Mrs. Hanson, after the first greetings were over, gave Carrie thebaby and proceeded to get supper. Her husband asked a fewquestions and sat down to read the evening paper. He was asilent man, American born, of a Swede father, and now employed asa cleaner of refrigerator cars at the stock-yards. To him thepresence or absence of his wife's sister was a matter ofindifference. Her personal appearance did not affect him one wayor the other. His one observation to the point was concerningthe chances of work in Chicago.}
