1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Oh, I've promised Mrs. Hale to go with her to the Exposition to-night," she returned, apologetically.
2. "The part of Katisha, the country maid, in 'The Wives of Abdul'at the Broadway, heretofore played by Inez Carew, will behereafter filled by Carrie Madenda, one of the cleverest membersof the chorus."
3. Vance led the way through lanes of shining tables, at which wereseated parties of two, three, four, five, or six. The air ofassurance and dignity about it all was exceedingly noticeable tothe novitiate. Incandescent lights, the reflection of their glowin polished glasses, and the shine of gilt upon the walls, combined into one tone of light which it requires minutes ofcomplacent observation to separate and take particular note of.The white shirt fronts of the gentlemen, the bright costumes ofthe ladies, diamonds, jewels, fine feathers--all were exceedinglynoticeable.
4. Accordingly, when he arrived, he was disappointed to find Carrieout. He trifled about, hoping that she was somewhere in theneighbourhood and would soon return. He constantly listened, expecting to hear her foot on the stair.
5. Mrs. Hurstwood was the type of woman who has ever endeavoured toshine and has been more or less chagrined at the evidences ofsuperior capability in this direction elsewhere. Her knowledgeof life extended to that little conventional round of society ofwhich she was not--but longed to be--a member. She was notwithout realisation already that this thing was impossible, sofar as she was concerned. For her daughter, she hoped betterthings. Through Jessica she might rise a little. ThroughGeorge, Jr.'s, possible success she might draw to herself theprivilege of pointing proudly. Even Hurstwood was doing wellenough, and she was anxious that his small real estate adventuresshould prosper. His property holdings, as yet, were rathersmall, but his income was pleasing and his position withFitzgerald and Moy was fixed. Both those gentlemen were onpleasant and rather informal terms with him.
6. "I'd like to know what you did, then, in Montreal?" she answered.

1. As she passed out along the hall after getting her hat, a youngmachine hand, attracted by her looks, made bold to jest with her.
2. "Don't you care for me at all?"
3. In this atmosphere Hurstwood had moved for a number of years, notthinking deeply concerning it. His was not the order of natureto trouble for something better, unless the better wasimmediately and sharply contrasted. As it was, he received andgave, irritated sometimes by the little displays of selfishindifference, pleased at times by some show of finery whichsupposedly made for dignity and social distinction. The life ofthe resort which he managed was his life. There he spent most ofhis time. When he went home evenings the house looked nice. With rare exceptions the meals were acceptable, being the kindthat an ordinary servant can arrange. In part, he was interestedin the talk of his son and daughter, who always looked well. Thevanity of Mrs. Hurstwood caused her to keep her person rathershowily arrayed, but to Hurstwood this was much better thanplainness. There was no love lost between them. There was nogreat feeling of dissatisfaction. Her opinion on any subject wasnot startling. They did not talk enough together to come to theargument of any one point. In the accepted and popular phrase, she had her ideas and he had his. Once in a while he would meeta woman whose youth, sprightliness, and humour would make hiswife seem rather deficient by contrast, but the temporarydissatisfaction which such an encounter might arouse would becounterbalanced by his social position and a certain matter ofpolicy. He could not complicate his home life, because it mightaffect his relations with his employers. They wanted noscandals. A man, to hold his position, must have a dignifiedmanner, a clean record, a respectable home anchorage. Thereforehe was circumspect in all he did, and whenever he appeared in thepublic ways in the afternoon, or on Sunday, it was with his wife, and sometimes his children. He would visit the local resorts, orthose near by in Wisconsin, and spend a few stiff, polished daysstrolling about conventional places doing conventional things. He knew the need of it.
4. Carrie turned her eyes toward him as to an oracle.
5. As she did all these things, she was in a most despondent state.
6. "Oh, nonsense," said Carrie, blushing. "You know I'd be glad tosee you."

1. "Why, it's Hurstwood!" said Cargill, remembering now, and sorrythat he had not recognised him quickly enough in the beginning tohave avoided this meeting.
2. "Mr. Vance doesn't seem to find it very hard."
3. "There doesn't seem to be any place. Shaughnessy doesn't wantto."
4. "Carrie Meeber," she said slowly. "Three hundred and fifty-fourWest Van Buren Street, care S. C. Hanson."
5. It was truly a wintry evening, a few days later, when his onedistinct mental decision was reached. Already, at four o'clock, the sombre hue of night was thickening the air. A heavy snow wasfalling--a fine picking, whipping snow, borne forward by a swiftwind in long, thin lines. The streets were bedded with it--sixinches of cold, soft carpet, churned to a dirty brown by thecrush of teams and the feet of men. Along Broadway men pickedtheir way in ulsters and umbrellas. Along the Bowery, menslouched through it with collars and hats pulled over their ears.In the former thoroughfare businessmen and travellers were makingfor comfortable hotels. In the latter, crowds on cold errandsshifted past dingy stores, in the deep recesses of which lightswere already gleaming. There were early lights in the cablecars, whose usual clatter was reduced by the mantle about thewheels. The whole city was muffled by this fast-thickeningmantle.
6. "I'm very glad to meet you," said Ames, bowing politely toCarrie.

应用

1. Hurstwood wrote her one morning, asking her to meet him inJefferson Park, Monroe Street. He did not consider it policy tocall any more, even when Drouet was at home.
2. "She needn't see me," he answered, sullenly.
3. "She's going along with me this time," said Drouet.
4、 Drouet hesitated, now that he was in her presence, uncertain asto what course to pursue. He was no diplomat. He could neitherread nor see.
5、 Drouet laughed.

{ His dinner cost him .50. By eight o'clock he was through, andthen, seeing guests leaving and the crowd of pleasure-seekersthickening outside wondered where he should go. Not home.Carrie would be up. No, he would not go back there this evening. He would stay out and knock around as a man who was independent--not broke--well might. He bought a cigar, and went outside onthe corner where other individuals were lounging--brokers, racingpeople, thespians--his own flesh and blood. As he stood there,he thought of the old evenings in Chicago, and how he used todispose of them. Many's the game he had had. This took him topoker.

"Indeed you did," said Hurstwood, turning upon Carrie eyes inwhich she read more than the words.
