1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Carrie heard this with genuine sorrow. She had enjoyed Mrs.Vance's companionship so much. There was no one else in thehouse whom she knew. Again she would be all alone.
2. Passing Fifty-ninth Street, he took the west side of CentralPark, which he followed to Seventy-eighth Street. Then heremembered the neighbourhood and turned over to look at the massof buildings erected. It was very much improved. The great openspaces were filling up. Coming back, he kept to the Park until110th Street, and then turned into Seventh Avenue again, reachingthe pretty river by one o'clock.
3. After it was over she dressed quickly, and as the manager hadscolded some others and passed her, she imagined she must haveproved satisfactory. She wanted to get out quickly, because sheknew but few, and the stars were gossiping. Outside werecarriages and some correct youths in attractive clothing, waiting. Carrie saw that she was scanned closely. The flutterof an eyelash would have brought her a companion. That she didnot give.
4. "Get that thing off the track," shouted the two policemen.
5. "They'll want motormen, mostly."
6. It is curious to note how quickly a profession absorbs one.Carrie became wise in theatrical lore, hearing the gossip oflittle Lola. She learned what the theatrical papers were, whichones published items about actresses and the like. She began toread the newspaper notices, not only of the opera in which shehad so small a part, but of others. Gradually the desire fornotice took hold of her. She longed to be renowned like others, and read with avidity all the complimentary or critical commentsmade concerning others high in her profession. The showy worldin which her interest lay completely absorbed her.

1. Carrie timidly waited, standing. There were chairs, but no onemotioned her to be seated. The individual to whom the managerhad been talking went away quite crestfallen. That luminarygazed earnestly at some papers before him, as if they were of thegreatest concern.
2. "Look around," she said, a thought of the need that hung outsidethis fine restaurant like a hungry dog at her heels passing intoher eyes.
3. This process of THINKING began by a reversion to Carrie and thearrangement by which he was to get her away from Drouet. Howabout that now? His pain at her failure to meet or write himrapidly increased as he devoted himself to this subject. Hedecided to write her care of the West Side Post-office and askfor an explanation, as well as to have her meet him. The thoughtthat this letter would probably not reach her until Monday chafedhim exceedingly. He must get some speedier method--but how?
4. "What is your address?" he began again, fixing his pencil towrite.
5. Instantly she remembered that she had hoped to buy a few thingsfor herself. She needed clothes. Her hat was not nice.
6. "Minnie! What's the matter? Here, wake up," said Hanson, disturbed, and shaking her by the shoulder.

1. "To-morrow," he said, "you come down here and buy yourself askirt."
2. It was thus that the little theatre resounded to a babble ofsuccessful voices, the creak of fine clothes, the commonplace ofgood-nature, and all largely because of this man's bidding. Lookat him any time within the half hour before the curtain was up,he was a member of an eminent group--a rounded company of five ormore whose stout figures, large white bosoms, and shining pinsbespoke the character of their success. The gentlemen whobrought their wives called him out to shake hands. Seatsclicked, ushers bowed while he looked blandly on. He wasevidently a light among them, reflecting in his personality theambitions of those who greeted him. He was acknowledged, fawnedupon, in a way lionised. Through it all one could see thestanding of the man. It was greatness in a way, small as it was.
3. She looked at him quizzically, but melted with sympathy as thevalue of the look upon his face forced itself upon her. It waslove now, keen and strong--love enhanced by difficulty and worry. She could not help smiling.
4. "No," she answered, recovering herself and shutting her teeth."No, of course you don't see. There isn't anything you see. Youcouldn't have told me in the first place, could you? You had tomake me out wrong until it was too late. Now you come sneakingaround with your information and your talk about what you havedone."
5. The rooms which Mr. Withers displayed to Carrie and Lola werethree and bath--a suite on the parlour floor. They were done inchocolate and dark red, with rugs and hangings to match. Threewindows looked down into busy Broadway on the east, three into aside street which crossed there. There were two lovely bedrooms, set with brass and white enamel beds, white ribbon-trimmed chairsand chiffoniers to match. In the third room, or parlour, was apiano, a heavy piano lamp, with a shade of gorgeous pattern, alibrary table, several huge easy rockers, some dado book shelves, and a gilt curio case, filled with oddities. Pictures were uponthe walls, soft Turkish pillows upon the divan footstools ofbrown plush upon the floor. Such accommodations would ordinarilycost a hundred dollars a week.
6. "Do look here," she remarked to Lola. "See what this man says:'If you will only deign to grant me one half-hour,'" sherepeated, with an imitation of languor. "The idea. Aren't mensilly?"

1. "Certainly, you can TALK with me," she replied, laying emphasison the word.
2. In his position opportunity for taking his evenings out wasexcellent. He was a most faithful worker in general, and a manwho commanded the confidence of his employers in so far as thedistribution of his time was concerned. He could take such hoursoff as he chose, for it was well known that he fulfilled hismanagerial duties successfully, whatever time he might take. Hisgrace, tact, and ornate appearance gave the place an air whichwas most essential, while at the same time his long experiencemade him a most excellent judge of its stock necessities.Bartenders and assistants might come and go, singly or in groups, but, so long as he was present, the host of old-time customerswould barely notice the change. He gave the place the atmosphereto which they were used. Consequently, he arranged his hoursvery much to suit himself, taking now an afternoon, now anevening, but invariably returning between eleven and twelve towitness the last hour or two of the day's business and look afterthe closing details.
3. "The little cur!" he muttered.
4、 "I'm not dictating to you," she returned; "I'm telling you what Iwant."
5、 "Tired of it?"

Her cowardice began to trouble her in a way. She turned back, resolving to hunt up Storm and King and enter. On the way, sheencountered a great wholesale shoe company, through the broadplate windows of which she saw an enclosed executive department, hidden by frosted glass. { "Why, just this. You have this quality in your eyes and mouthand in your nature. You can lose it, you know. If you turn awayfrom it and live to satisfy yourself alone, it will go fastenough. The look will leave your eyes. Your mouth will change.Your power to act will disappear. You may think they won't, butthey will. Nature takes care of that."
