1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Drouet mused for a moment. He had not been sure until now thatthe ex-manager was not an influential figure in the background. He imagined not; but this assurance relieved him. It must bethat Carrie had got rid of him--as well she ought, he thought."A man always makes a mistake when he does anything like that,"he observed.
2. Chapter XII
3. This confused Carrie considerably, for she realised the flood-gates were open. She didn't know exactly what to answer."I don't know," she answered.
4. "Do you rehearse in the afternoons?" Hurstwood once asked, concealing almost completely the cynical protest and regret whichprompted it.
5. Carrie, flushed and excited, moved away as he admitted the boy.
6. "Do you know," he said, turning back to Carrie, after hisreflection, "I sometimes think it is a shame for people to spendso much money this way."

1. It does not take money long to make plain its impotence, providing the desires are in the realm of affection. With herone hundred and fifty in hand, Carrie could think of nothingparticularly to do. In itself, as a tangible, apparent thingwhich she could touch and look upon, it was a diverting thing fora few days, but this soon passed. Her hotel bill did not requireits use. Her clothes had for some time been wholly satisfactory.Another day or two and she would receive another hundred andfifty. It began to appear as if this were not so startlinglynecessary to maintain her present state. If she wanted to doanything better or move higher she must have more--a great dealmore.
2. At a quarter after one in the morning he came out of the place. The chill, bare streets seemed a mockery of his state. He walkedslowly west, little thinking of his row with Carrie. He ascendedthe stairs and went into his room as if there had been notrouble. It was his loss that occupied his mind. Sitting downon the bedside he counted his money. There was now but a hundredand ninety dollars and some change. He put it up and began toundress.
3. "Yes."
4. "All right," said Drouet, fishing for bills.
5. Carrie took the cue, and replied:
6. "At four, then, we may expect you?"

1. Drouet really had called, but it was with a very different mindfrom that which Carrie had imagined. He expected to find her, tojustify his return by claiming that he came to get the remainingportion of his wardrobe, and before he got away again to patch upa peace.
2. Some of the more favoured of his friends whom he had invitedbegan to roll up in carriages now. They came shuffling in with agreat show of finery and much evident feeling of content andimportance.
3. For the most part he lounged about, dressed in excellent tailoredsuits of imported goods, a solitaire ring, a fine blue diamond inhis tie, a striking vest of some new pattern, and a watch-chainof solid gold, which held a charm of rich design, and a watch ofthe latest make and engraving. He knew by name, and could greetpersonally with a "Well, old fellow," hundreds of actors, merchants, politicians, and the general run of successfulcharacters about town, and it was part of his success to do so.He had a finely graduated scale of informality and friendship, which improved from the "How do you do?" addressed to thefifteen-dollar-a-week clerks and office attaches, who, by longfrequenting of the place, became aware of his position, to the"Why, old man, how are you?" which he addressed to those noted orrich individuals who knew him and were inclined to be friendly. There was a class, however, too rich, too famous, or toosuccessful, with whom he could not attempt any familiarity ofaddress, and with these he was professionally tactful, assuming agrave and dignified attitude, paying them the deference whichwould win their good feeling without in the least compromisinghis own bearing and opinions. There were, in the last place, afew good followers, neither rich nor poor, famous, nor yetremarkably successful, with whom he was friendly on the score ofgood-fellowship. These were the kind of men with whom he wouldconverse longest and most seriously. He loved to go out and havea good time once in a while--to go to the races, the theatres, the sporting entertainments at some of the clubs. He kept ahorse and neat trap, had his wife and two children, who were wellestablished in a neat house on the North Side near Lincoln Park, and was altogether a very acceptable individual of our greatAmerican upper class--the first grade below the luxuriously rich.
4. "She's not so inexperienced as she looks," he thought, andthereafter his respect and ardour were increased.
5. "So your husband told me," he answered. "Well, it was reallyvery enjoyable. Turned out much better than I expected."
6. In this manner the second, third, and fourth months passed.Winter came, and with it a feeling that indoors was best, so thatthe attending of theatres was not much talked of. Hurstwood madegreat efforts to meet all expenditures without a show of feelingone way or the other. He pretended that he was reinvesting hismoney in strengthening the business for greater ends in thefuture. He contented himself with a very moderate allowance ofpersonal apparel, and rarely suggested anything for Carrie. Thusthe first winter passed.

1. "Excellent."
2. "Who is it you wish to see?" he required.
3. "When will we be married?" she asked, diffidently, forgetting inher difficult situation that she had hoped he took her to beDrouet's wife.
4、 Suddenly she remembered Lola, who was out at the time.
5、 He adjusted his paper very comfortably and continued. It was theone thing he read with absorbing interest.
