2. "Won't you let me tell you----"
3. He began to waver in his resolution, when a patrol wagon rolledup and more officers dismounted. Now the track was quicklycleared and the release effected.
4. At the Empire Theatre she found a hive of peculiarly listless andindifferent individuals. Everything ornately upholstered, everything carefully finished, everything remarkably reserved.
5. Then he called to a young woman who was already of the company:
6. The gentleman looked him over and fished for a dime. Nothing butquarters were in his pocket.

1. "You want to look out for them things," said the officer on theleft, condescendingly.
2. On Sunday evening Carrie dined with him at a place he hadselected in East Adams Street, and thereafter they took a cab towhat was then a pleasant evening resort out on Cottage GroveAvenue near 39th Street. In the process of his declaration hesoon realised that Carrie took his love upon a higher basis thanhe had anticipated. She kept him at a distance in a ratherearnest way, and submitted only to those tender tokens ofaffection which better become the inexperienced lover. Hurstwoodsaw that she was not to be possessed for the asking, and deferredpressing his suit too warmly.
3. "Wha--what's the matter?" said Minnie, drowsily.
4. Carrie had bathed and was waiting when he arrived. She lookedrefreshed--more delightful than ever, but reserved. Since he hadgone she had resumed somewhat of her cold attitude towards him.Love was not blazing in her heart. He felt it, and his troublesseemed increased. He could not take her in his arms; he did noteven try. Something about her forbade it. In part his opinionwas the result of his own experiences and reflections belowstairs.
5. "Let up," said a voice, "you're all right. Stand up."
6. "By George! it's a shame they should have it all," he vaguelythought to himself on several occasions. "I didn't do anything."

1. "Well," he said, taking offence at her manner, "you needn't getmad about it. I'm just asking you."
2. "Yes. You know I can't stay six months in one place. I justhave to move. Remember now--half-past five."
3. He was so excited that he could not stay in the box. He wentinto the lobby, and then into the street, thinking. Drouet didnot return. In a few minutes the last act was over, and he wascrazy to have Carrie alone. He cursed the luck that could keephim smiling, bowing, shamming, when he wanted to tell her that heloved her, when he wanted to whisper to her alone. He groaned ashe saw that his hopes were futile. He must even take her tosupper, shamming. He finally went about and asked how she wasgetting along. The actors were all dressing, talking, hurryingabout. Drouet was palavering himself with the looseness ofexcitement and passion. The manager mastered himself only by agreat effort.
4. Jessica heard this last while walking out of the room, with atoss of her head and a flick of her pretty skirts indicative ofthe independence and indifference she felt. She did not proposeto be quarrelled with.
5. "Oh, come off! Here."
6. The tone he used made it seem as if the matter deserved onlyslight consideration. Carrie thought a little, the whileenjoying the pretty scene.

1. Thus in life there is ever the intellectual and the emotionalnature--the mind that reasons, and the mind that feels. Of onecome the men of action--generals and statesmen; of the other, thepoets and dreamers--artists all.
2. "Not more than a dollar," said Mrs. Vance.
3. "Where did you go this morning?" he finally asked weakly.
4、 "It's a big place," he said. "You can get in somewhere in a fewdays. Everybody does."
5、 She felt the drag of a lean and narrow life. The walls of therooms were discordantly papered. The floors were covered withmatting and the hall laid with a thin rag carpet. One could seethat the furniture was of that poor, hurriedly patched togetherquality sold by the instalment houses.

Carrie heard all this in a very ruffled state. It soundedsincere enough, however, despite all he had done. There was atenseness in Hurstwood's voice and manner which could but havesome effect. She did not want anything to do with him. He wasmarried, he had deceived her once, and now again, and she thoughthim terrible. Still there is something in such daring and powerwhich is fascinating to a woman, especially if she can be made tofeel that it is all prompted by love of her.

"All right," he said, "but you'll hear me out, won't you? Afterall you have said about loving me, you might hear me. I don'twant to do you any harm. I'll give you the money to go back withwhen you go. I merely want to tell you, Carrie. You can't stopme from loving you, whatever you may think."

"Not to-night," she said, shaking her head. "We'll have a talksome other time."

"Nothing of the kind," he answered. "I can't avoid businessrelations, and that's all there is to it."

{ He crept toward her with a light in his eye that was ominous.Something in the woman's cool, cynical, upper-handish manner, asif she were already master, caused him to feel for the moment asif he could strangle her.

      "Oh, I don't know," she would reply, feeling delight in the factthat one should think so, hesitating to believe, though shereally did, that she was vain enough to think so much of herself.}

"What are you going to do?" he said.

Carrie, now that she had yielded sufficiently to Hurstwood toconfess her affection, no longer troubled about her attitudetowards him. Temporarily she gave little thought to Drouet, thinking only of the dignity and grace of her lover and of hisconsuming affection for her. On the first evening, she didlittle but go over the details of the afternoon. It was thefirst time her sympathies had ever been thoroughly aroused, andthey threw a new light on her character. She had some power ofinitiative, latent before, which now began to exert itself. Shelooked more practically upon her state and began to seeglimmerings of a way out. Hurstwood seemed a drag in thedirection of honour. Her feelings were exceedingly creditable,in that they constructed out of these recent developmentssomething which conquered freedom from dishonour. She had noidea what Hurstwood's next word would be. She only took hisaffection to be a fine thing, and appended better, more generousresults accordingly.

A sharp voice answered her mental interrogation, driving away allimmediate fears on that score.

{ neglected to light the lamp. The fire in the grate, too, hadburned low.

"If you think so," she answered, her manner being so enforcedlyreserved as to almost excite suspicion. Drouet noticed somethingbut he thought it was due to her feelings concerning their talkabout marriage."He called once, he said."
