1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 That night she was visited by Mrs. Hale, whose chatter andprotracted stay made it impossible to dwell upon her predicamentor the fortune of the day. Before retiring, however, she satdown to think, and gave herself up to the most gloomyforebodings. Drouet had not put in an appearance. She had hadno word from any quarter, she had spent a dollar of her precioussum in procuring food and paying car fare. It was evident thatshe would not endure long. Besides, she had discovered noresource.
2. While the appearance of the shop and the announcement of theprice paid per week operated very much as a blow to Carrie'sfancy, the fact that work of any kind was offered after so rude around of experience was gratifying. She could not begin tobelieve that she would take the place, modest as her aspirationswere. She had been used to better than that. Her mere experienceand the free out-of-door life of the country caused her nature torevolt at such confinement. Dirt had never been her share. Hersister's flat was clean. This place was grimy and low, the girlswere careless and hardened. They must be bad-minded and hearted, she imagined. Still, a place had been offered her. SurelyChicago was not so bad if she could find one place in one day.She might find another and better later.
3. This pleased Hurstwood immensely. He gave Drouet no credit forany feelings toward Carrie whatever. He envied him, and now, ashe looked at the well-dressed jolly salesman, whom he so muchliked, the gleam of the rival glowed in his eye. He began to"size up" Drouet from the standpoints of wit and fascination. Hebegan to look to see where he was weak. There was no disputingthat, whatever he might think of him as a good fellow, he felt acertain amount of contempt for him as a lover. He could hoodwinkhim all right. Why, if he would just let Carrie see one suchlittle incident as that of Thursday, it would settle the matter. He ran on in thought, almost exulting, the while he laughed andchatted, and Drouet felt nothing. He had no power of analysingthe glance and the atmosphere of a man like Hurstwood. He stoodand smiled and accepted the invitation while his friend examinedhim with the eye of a hawk.
4. "Sure, I'll attend to it."
5. "Well, you'd better go sit down, then."
6. "There you go again," he observed. "One would think I never didanything, the way you begin."

1. "You do?" he said, pressing his lips to her own.
2. "And I had such a good dinner!" said Carrie.
3. The woman didn't appeal to him from her spending side.
4. "What's the use of your standing there and talking like that, now?" he asked. "Do you think I've had it alone? You talk as ifI'd taken something."
5. "You couldn't get out until the train stops again," saidHurstwood. "It won't be very long until we reach anotherstation. You can get out then if you want to. I won't stop you.All I want you to do is to listen a moment. You'll let me tellyou, won't you?"
6. Drouet looked at her wonderingly. For all his lack of dignity insuch matters he did not know how to begin. He stared at her inthe most flagrant manner until at last she said:

1. "Suppose we didn't have time to get married here?" he added, anafterthought striking him.
2. The important night of the first real performance came. She didnot suggest to Hurstwood that he come and see. He did not thinkof going. It would only be money wasted. She had such a smallpart.
3. "Now," said a sharp, quick-mannered Jew, who was sitting at aroll-top desk near the window, "have you ever worked in any otherstore?"
4. He found a hydrant, with a trough which had once been used forhorses, but there was no towel here, and his handkerchief wassoiled from yesterday. He contented himself with wetting hiseyes with the ice-cold water. Then he sought the foreman, whowas already on the ground.
5. There was much more passing now than the mere words indicated. He recognised the indescribable thing that made up forfascination and beauty in her. She realised that she was ofinterest to him from the one standpoint which a woman bothdelights in and fears. Her manner was simple, though for the veryreason that she had not yet learned the many little affectationswith which women conceal their true feelings. Some things shedid appeared bold. A clever companion--had she ever had one--would have warned her never to look a man in the eyes sosteadily.
6. As a result of this, she noticed a shade of thought pass over hisface, as if he were beginning to realise that things werechanged. Good-nature dictated something better than this for onewho had always liked her.

1. "She's too nervous," said Drouet, feeling in the mildness of theremark that he was lying for once.
2. They talked some few minutes on general topics.
3. Drouet followed him with his eyes, much interested.
4、 "It's a lie, I tell you," he said, in a low, sharp voice."You've been searching around for some cheap accusation formonths and now you think you have it. You think you'll springsomething and get the upper hand. Well, I tell you, you can't.As long as I'm in this house I'm master of it, and you or any oneelse won't dictate to me--do you hear?"
5、 The manager smiled most blandly.

"I can't do this way," he said to himself. "There's no use of mystarting out mornings without first thinking up some place to go.I'll think of some places and then look them up."

"I don't know," he answered, looking her brazenly over. "Haveyou ever had any experience upon the stage?"

And yet she was not grieved at Hurstwood's love. No strain ofbitterness was in it for her, whatever he knew. He was evidentlysincere. His passion was real and warm. There was power in whathe said. What should she do? She went on thinking this, answering vaguely, languishing affectionately, and altogetherdrifting, until she was on a borderless sea of speculation.

Carrie could not have told herself at this moment whether she wasglad or sorry that the impressive manager was awaiting herpresence. She was slightly flurried and tingling in the cheeks, but it was more nervousness than either fear or favour. She didnot try to conjecture what the drift of the conversation wouldbe. She only felt that she must be careful, and that Hurstwoodhad an indefinable fascination for her. Then she gave her tieits last touch with her fingers and went below.

{ Somewhat encouraged, she ventured into another large structure. It was a clothing company, and more people were in evidence--well-dressed men of forty and more, surrounded by brass railings.
