1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "What time do you get up to get breakfast?" asked Carrie.
2. In the dining-room stood a sideboard laden with glisteningdecanters and other utilities and ornaments in glass, thearrangement of which could not be questioned. Here was somethingHurstwood knew about. He had studied the subject for years in hisbusiness. He took no little satisfaction in telling each Mary, shortly after she arrived, something of what the art of the thingrequired. He was not garrulous by any means. On the contrary, there was a fine reserve in his manner toward the entire domesticeconomy of his life which was all that is comprehended by thepopular term, gentlemanly. He would not argue, he would not talkfreely. In his manner was something of the dogmatist. What hecould not correct, he would ignore. There was a tendency in himto walk away from the impossible thing.
3. When Minnie found the note next morning, after a night of mingledwonder and anxiety, which was not exactly touched by yearning, sorrow, or love, she exclaimed: "Well, what do you think ofthat?"
4. Once there, Hurstwood breathed easier. He felt as if the worldwere not quite so bad with such a good man in it. Others seemedto feel like himself about this.
5. "That is it," he said, his voice dropping to a soft minor, "Iknow too much of the world."
6. He looked at her hard.

1. The third night she went to her front bed without apologies.
2. Carrie looked out through the window into the busy street. Thereit was, the admirable, great city, so fine when you are not poor.An elegant coach, with a prancing pair of bays, passed by,carrying in its upholstered depths a young lady.
3. Not only did Carrie feel the drag of desire for all which was newand pleasing in apparel for women, but she noticed too, with atouch at the heart, the fine ladies who elbowed and ignored her, brushing past in utter disregard of her presence, themselveseagerly enlisted in the materials which the store contained.Carrie was not familiar with the appearance of her more fortunatesisters of the city. Neither had she before known the nature andappearance of the shop girls with whom she now compared poorly. They were pretty in the main, some even handsome, with an air ofindependence and indifference which added, in the case of themore favoured, a certain piquancy. Their clothes were neat, inmany instances fine, and wherever she encountered the eye of oneit was only to recognise in it a keen analysis of her ownposition--her individual shortcomings of dress and that shadow ofmanner which she thought must hang about her and make clear toall who and what she was. A flame of envy lighted in her heart. She realised in a dim way how much the city held--wealth,fashion, ease--every adornment for women, and she longed fordress and beauty with a whole heart.
4. He hastened to his room with rising spirits and changed hislinen. As he did so, he made up his mind that if Carrie wasalone, or if she had gone to another place, it behooved him tofind out. He decided to call at once.
5. "They always had as much as I had," he thought.
6. When she had closed the hall-door, she paused a moment andwondered what they would think. Some thought of the queerness ofher deed affected her. She went slowly down the stairs. Shelooked back up the lighted step, and then affected to stroll upthe street. When she reached the corner she quickened her pace.

1. "You'll stay with me, won't you?" he asked.
2. "I thought you had gone with Pearl," she said to her lover.
3. "Oh," thought Carrie, "if she were to come here and see him?"
4. He was so interested in forwarding all good causes that hesometimes became enthusiastic, giving vent to these preachments.Something in Carrie appealed to him. He wanted to stir her up.
5. The next evening Carrie was called out, much as if for an error.
6. While he was thinking thus elatedly, he remembered that he wantedsome clean linen in the morning.

1. "That is it," he said, his voice dropping to a soft minor, "Iknow too much of the world."
2. Carrie was certainly better than this man, as she was superior, mentally, to Drouet. She came fresh from the air of the village, the light of the country still in her eye. Here was neitherguile nor rapacity. There were slight inherited traits of bothin her, but they were rudimentary. She was too full of wonderand desire to be greedy. She still looked about her upon thegreat maze of the city without understanding. Hurstwood felt thebloom and the youth. He picked her as he would the fresh fruitof a tree. He felt as fresh in her presence as one who is takenout of the flash of summer to the first cool breath of spring.
3. Carrie went on, leading much this same life for six monthsthereafter or more. She did not see Ames any more. He calledonce upon the Vances, but she only heard about it through theyoung wife. Then he went West, and there was a gradualsubsidence of whatever personal attraction had existed. Themental effect of the thing had not gone, however, and never wouldentirely. She had an ideal to contrast men by--particularly menclose to her.
4、 "Nothing," said Carrie. "I don't feel very well tonight."
5、 She was flushing scarlet to the roots of her hair, but Drouet didnot catch the full hue of her face, owing to the modified lightof the room. He was regaining much confidence as Carrie defendedherself with denials.

Then the sheer loneliness of his situation rushed upon him infull.

  • 赖清德 08-08

"Do you want to go to all of them?" he said with a risinginflection.

  • 李琳 08-08

"Where do you want to go?" he enquired.

  • 诺曼福斯特 08-08

"Well," he said, taking offence at her manner, "you needn't getmad about it. I'm just asking you."

{ To Carrie he said nothing whatsoever. She could feel that herrequest disturbed him. To pay her would soon become adistressing thing.

  • 谢东波 08-06

      "Well," he said, "I should judge you were rather sympathetic inyour nature."}

  • 奇诺 08-06

"How about this ad of yours?" asked Hurstwood, who ratherobjected to the looks of the place.

As the curtain for the next act arose, Drouet came back. He wasvery much enlivened in temper and inclined to whisper, butHurstwood pretended interest. He fixed his eyes on the stage, although Carrie was not there, a short bit of melodramatic comedypreceding her entrance. He did not see what was going on,however. He was thinking his own thoughts, and they werewretched.

Among other things, he noticed a circular issued by one of thecompanies, which read:

{ "Mind how you address me, missy. I'll not have it. Hear me now;I'll not have it!"

  • 陈洁 08-03

She paused at the sound of the last two words and wrung herhands. The knowledge of Hurstwood's perfidy wounded her like aknife."Oh," she sobbed, repressing herself wonderfully and keeping hereyes dry. "Oh, oh!"
