1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You see, Watson," he explained in the early hours of themorning as we sat over a glass of whisky and soda in Baker Street,"it was perfectly obvious from the first that the only possibleobject of this rather fantastic business of the advertisement ofthe League, and the copying of the Encyclopaedia, must be to getthis not over-bright pawnbroker out of the way for a number ofhours every day. It was a curious way of managing it, but, really, it would be difficult to suggest a better. The method wasno doubt suggested to Clay's ingenious mind by the colour of hisaccomplice's hair. The 4 pound a week was a lure which must draw him,and what was it to them, who were playing for thousands? They putin the advertisement, one rogue has the temporary office, theother rogue incites the man to apply for it, and together theymanage to secure his absence every morning in the week. From thetime that I heard of the assistant having come for half wages, itwas obvious to me that he had some strong motive for securing thesituation."
2. "A little patience, Mr. Bennett. Things will soon develop. UnlessI am mistaken, next Tuesday may mark a crisis. Certainly we shall bein Camford on that day. meanwhile, the general position isundeniably unpleasant, and if Miss Presbury can prolong her visit-"That is easy."
3. "Hum!" said Holmes. "I think I see how things worked, and I canunderstand how this message would, as you say, bring them to a head. But while you wait, you might tell me what you can.
4. "Are you Mr. Godfrey Staunton?"
5. "No, no. The place belonged to her late husband, Sir James Norbertonhas no claim on it at all. It is only a life interest and reverts toher husband's brother. Meantime, she draws the rents every year.""And brother Robert, I suppose, spends the said rents?""That is about the size of it. He is a devil of a fellow and mustlead her a most uneasy life. Yet I have heard that she is devoted tohim. But what is amiss at Shoscombe?"
6. "Oh, come! Try the dish before you."

1. "You don't say so?"
2. "I hope we may clear him, Miss Turner," said Sherlock Holmes. "Youmay rely upon my doing all that I can."
3. "And yet, Watson- and yet! This bridge- a single broad span of stonewith balustraded sides- carries the drive over the narrowest part of along, deep, reedgirt sheet of water. Thor Mere it is called. In themouth of the bridge lay the dead woman. Such are the main facts. Buthere, if I mistake not, is our client, considerably before his time."Billy had opened the door, but the name which he announced was anunexpected one. Mr. Marlow Bates was a stranger to both of us. Hewas a thin, nervous wisp of a man with frightened eyes and atwitching, hesitating manner- a man whom my own professional eye wouldjudge to be on the brink of an absolute nervous breakdown."You seem agitated, Mr. Bates," said Holmes. "Pray sit down. Ifear I can only give you a short time, for I have an appointment ateleven."
4. "Then, if my friend of the night comes to revisit me, he will findthe bird flown. We are all in your hands, Mr. Holmes, and you musttell us exactly what you would like done. Perhaps you would preferthat Joseph came with us so as to look after me?"
5. "You don't think that it might have been two shots fired almost atthe same instant?"
6. "It seems that the whole camp was roused near midnight by theroars of the animal and the screams of the woman. The different groomsand employees rushed from their tents, carrying lanterns, and by theirlight an awful sight was revealed. Ronder lay, with the back of hishead crushed in and deep claw-marks across his scalp, some ten yardsfrom the cage, which was open. Close to the door of the cage layMrs. Ronder upon her back, with the creature squatting and snarlingabove her. It had torn her face in such a fashion that it was neverthought that she could live. Several of the circus men, headed byLeonardo, the strong man, and Griggs, the clown, drove the creatureoff with poles, upon which it sprang back into the cage and was atonce locked in. How it had got loose was a mystery. It was conjecturedthat the pair intended to enter the cage, but that when the door wasloosed the creature bounded out upon them. There was no other point ofinterest in the evidence save that the woman in a delirium of agonykept screaming, 'Coward! Coward!' as she was carried back to the vanin which they lived. It was six months before she was fit to giveevidence, but the inquest was duly held, with the obvious verdict ofdeath from misadventure.

1. "And what became of the bust?" asked Holmes, after a careful studyof this picture.
2. "Is he not afraid of burglars?"
3. "Very well, sir. And this stone?"
4. "Surely that is Baker Street" I answered, staring through the dimwindow.
5. "I am a bit of an archaeologist myself when it comes to houses,"said Holmes, laughing. "I was wondering if this was Queen Anne orGeorgian."
6. "You have no fear of burglars?"

1. "Let us try to reconstruct the situation," said he as we droveswiftly past the Houses of Parliament and over Westminster Bridge."These villains have coaxed this unhappy lady to London, after firstalienating her from her faithful maid. If she has written anyletters they have been intercepted. Through some confederate they haveengaged a furnished house. Once inside it, they have made her aprisoner, and they have become possessed of the valuable jewellerywhich has been their object from the first. Already they have begun tosell part of it, which seems safe enough to them, since they have noreason to think that anyone is interested in the lady's fate. When sheis released she will, of course, denounce them. Therefore, she mustnot be released. But they cannot keep her under lock and keyforever. So murder is their only solution."
2. "You mean the Austrian murderer?"
3. "I think it is clear enough. You came back by an unexpected way, andso he had no waming until you were at the very door. What could he do?He caught up everything which would betray him, and he rushed intoyour bedroom to conceal himself"
4、 "You will remember, Watson," he remarked one afternoon, "thatthere is a single common point of resemblance in the varying reportswhich have reached us. This concerns the effect of the atmosphere ofthe room in each case upon those who had first entered it. You willrecollect that Mortimer Tregennis, in describing the episode of hislast visit to his brother's house, remarked that the doctor onentering the room fell into a chair? You had forgotten? Well, I cananswer for it that it was so. Now, you will remember also that Mrs.Porter, the housekeeper, told us that she herself fainted uponentering the room and had afterwards opened the window. In thesecond case- that of Mortimer Tregennis himself- you cannot haveforgotten the horrible stuffiness of the room when we arrived, though the servant had thrown open the window. That servant, I foundupon inquiry, was so ill that she had gone to her bed. You will admit,Watson, that these facts are very suggestive. In each case there isevidence of a poisonous atmosphere. In each case, also, there iscombustion going on in the room- in the one case a fire, in theother a lamp. The fire was needed, but the lamp was lit- as acomparison of the oil consumed will show- long after it was broaddaylight. Why? Surely because there is some connection between threethings- the burning, the stuffy atmosphere, and, finally, themadness or death of those unfortunate people. That is clear, is itnot?"
5、 "Then I suggest that we turn our dinner into a supper andfollow up this clue while it is still hot."

But there areone or two points upon which I wish to be very sure before I start. This unhappy lady, as I understand it, has appeared to assault boththe children, her own baby and your little son?"

      "Curious people, Watson! I don't pretend to understand it all yet,but very curious people anyway. It's a double-winged house, and theservants live on one side, the family on the other. There's no linkbetween the two save for Henderson's own servant, who serves thefamily's meals. Everything is carried to a certain door, which formsthe one connection. Governess and children hardly go out at all,except into the garden. Henderson never by any chance walks alone. Hisdark secretary is like his shadow. The gossip among the servants isthat their master is terribly afraid of something. 'Sold his soul tothe devil in exchange for money,' says Warner, 'and expects hiscreditor to come up and claim his own.' Where they came from, or whothey are, nobody has an idea. They are very violent. Twice Hendersonhas lashed at folk with his dog-whip, and only his long purse andheavy compensation have kept him out of the courts.}

"You say that you have had it because you need a change. Let mesuggest that you take one. How would Lausanne do, my dear Watson-first-class tickets and all expenses paid on a princely scale?""Splendid! But why?"
