2. "That puts a burden of duty on you. It so happens that you havethis thing. It is no credit to you--that is, I mean, you mightnot have had it. You paid nothing to get it. But now that youhave it, you must do something with it."
3. "Well, you can do that all right," he said.

5. He did not even detect the shade of melancholy which settled inher eyes. Worst of all, she now began to feel the loneliness ofthe flat and seek the company of Mrs. Vance, who liked herexceedingly.
6. "I don't know," returned Carrie, warming, in spite of her firsttroubled feelings, toward this handsome, good-natured youngmatron.

1. Once these things were in her hand, on her person, she mightdream of giving them up; the method by which they came mightintrude itself so forcibly that she would ache to be rid of thethought of it, but she would not give them up. "Put on the oldclothes--that torn pair of shoes," was called to her by herconscience in vain. She could possibly have conquered the fearof hunger and gone back; the thought of hard work and a narrowround of suffering would, under the last pressure of conscience, have yielded, but spoil her appearance?--be old-clothed and poor-appearing?--never!
2. "Will you let me come back if I want to?" she asked, as if shenow had the upper hand and her companion was utterly subdued.
3. Individual after individual passed him, nearly all well dressed, almost all indifferent. He saw coaches rolling by, gentlemenpassing with ladies--the evening's merriment was beginning inthis region of theatres and hotels.
4. "Scab!" he yelled. "Scab!"
5. "You look fine that way, Cad," he said.
6. "Charlie Drouet and his wife. They are friends of Moy's,visiting here."

1. "What put that idea in your head?"
2. "What is it?" said the manager to Carrie, apparently noticing herfor the first time. He thought he was going to be held up forfree tickets.
3. Monday Carrie went again to the Casino.
4、 It had been tacitly understood beforehand that she was to getwork and pay her board. He was of a clean, saving disposition, and had already paid a number of monthly instalments on two lotsfar out on the West Side. His ambition was some day to build ahouse on them.

As for Hurstwood, he was making a great fight against thedifficulties of a changed condition. He was too shrewd not torealise the tremendous mistake he had made, and appreciate thathe had done well in getting where he was, and yet he could nothelp contrasting his present state with his former, hour afterhour, and day after day.

{ They fell into a sort of broken, ragged line. One might see, now, some of the chief characteristics by contrast. There was awooden leg in the line. Hats were all drooping, a group thatwould ill become a second-hand Hester Street basement collection.Trousers were all warped and frayed at the bottom and coats wornand faded. In the glare of the store lights, some of the faceslooked dry and chalky; others were red with blotches and puffedin the cheeks and under the eyes; one or two were rawboned andreminded one of railroad hands. A few spectators came near, drawn by the seemingly conferring group, then more and more, andquickly there was a pushing, gaping crowd. Some one in the linebegan to talk.

In the central portion was the vast wholesale and shoppingdistrict, to which the uninformed seeker for work usuallydrifted. It was a characteristic of Chicago then, and one notgenerally shared by other cities, that individual firms of anypretension occupied individual buildings. The presence of ampleground made this possible. It gave an imposing appearance tomost of the wholesale houses, whose offices were upon the groundfloor and in plain view of the street. The large plates ofwindow glass, now so common, were then rapidly coming into use,and gave to the ground floor offices a distinguished andprosperous look. The casual wanderer could see as he passed apolished array of office fixtures, much frosted glass, clerkshard at work, and genteel businessmen in "nobby" suits and cleanlinen lounging about or sitting in groups. Polished brass ornickel signs at the square stone entrances announced the firm andthe nature of the business in rather neat and reserved terms. The entire metropolitan centre possessed a high and mighty aircalculated to overawe and abash the common applicant, and to makethe gulf between poverty and success seem both wide and deep.
