2. "Then we had a talk as to what we should do, and Frank was all foropenness, but I was so ashamed of it all that I felt as if I shouldlike to vanish away and never see any of them again-just sending aline to pa, perhaps, to show him that I was alive. It was awful tome to think of all those lords and ladies sitting round thatbreakfast-table and waiting for me to come back. So Frank took mywedding clothes and things and made a bundle of them, so that I shouldnot be traced, and dropped them away somewhere where no one could findthem. It is likely that we should have gone on to Paris to-morrow,only that this good gentleman, Mr. Holmes, came round to us thisevening, though how he found us is more than I can think, and heshowed us very clearly and kindly that I was wrong and that Frankwas right, and that we should be putting ourselves in the wrong ifwe were so secret. Then he offered to give us a chance of talking toLord St. Simon alone, and so we came right away round to his roomsat once. Now, Robert, you have heard it all, and I am very sorry ifI have given you pain, and I hope that you do not think very meanly ofme."

4. "There's the village," said the driver, pointing to a cluster ofroofs some distance to the left; "but if you want to get to the house, you'll find it shorter to get over this stile, and so by the foot-pathover the fields. There it is, where the lady is walking.""And the lady, I fancy, is Miss Stoner," observed Holmes, shadinghis eyes. "Yes, I think we had better do as you suggest."We got off, paid our fare, and the trap rattled back on its way toLeatherhead.
5. "There are three constables on their way."
6. "Yes, yes, I am a little absent-minded in such matters. But have youyour revolver on you?"

1. She was brown with the dust and draped with the cobwebs which hadcome from the walls of her hiding-place. Her face, too, was streakedwith grime, and at the best she could never have been handsome, forshe had the exact physical characteristics which Holmes had divined, with, in addition, a long and obstinate chin. What with her naturalblindness, and what with the change from dark to light, she stood asone dazed, blinking about her to see where and who we were. And yet,in spite of all these disadvantages, there was a certain nobility inthe woman's bearing- a gallantry in the defiant chin and in theupraised head, which compelled something of respect and admiration.Stanley Hopkins had laid his hand upon her arm and claimed her ashis prisoner, but she waved him aside gently, and yet with anover-mastering dignity which compelled obedience. The old man lay backin his chair with a twitching face, and stared at her with broodingeyes.
2. "That's Peter, the groom," cried the stranger. "He drove her. Thebeasts have pulled him off and clubbed him. Let him lie; we can't dohim any good, but we may save her from the worst fate that canbefall a woman."
3. "Yes; his brother, Colonel Valentine Walter, has testified to hisdeparture from Woolwich, and Admiral Sinclair to his arrival inLondon; so Sir James is no longer a direct factor in the problem.""Who was the other man with a key?"
4. "There is at least a presumption that the vessel in which theman or men are is a sailing-ship. It looks as if they always senttheir singular warning or token before them when starting upontheir mission. You see how quickly the deed followed the signwhen it came from Dundee. If they had come from Pondicherry in asteamer they would have arrived almost as soon as their letter. But, as a matter of fact, seven weeks elapsed. I think that thoseseven weeks represented the difference between the mail-boat whichbrought the letter and the sailing vessel which brought thewriter."
5. "You hardly realize the effect of your own action, Mr. Holmes," saidhe. "You place me in a most serious dilemma, for I am perfectlycertain that you would be proud to take over the case if I couldgive you the facts, and yet a promise forbids me from revealing themall. May I, at least, lay all that I can before you?"
6. "No, no, Mr. Gilchrist, sir, I never said a word- never one word!"cried the servant.

1. "I have no sympathy with these childish games. The young man'sfate interests me deeply, since I know him and like him. Thefootball match does not come within my horizon at all.""I claim your sympathy, then, in my investigation of Mr.Staunton's fate. Do you know where he is?"
2. "No, I heard nothing. But, indeed, Mr. Holmes, I was so agitated andhorrified by this terrible outbreak that I rushed to get back to thepeace of my own room, and I was incapable of noticing anything whichhappened."
3. "He came again and again. Yet I was aware that Gennaro was no morehappy than I was in his presence. My poor husband would sit pale andlistless, listening to the endless raving upon politics and uponsocial questions which made up our visitor's conversation. Gennarosaid nothing, but I, who knew him so well, could read in his face someemotion which I had never seen there before. At first I thought thatit was dislike. And then, gradually, I understood that it was morethan dislike. It was fear- a deep, secret, shrinking fear. That night-the night that I read his terror- I put my arms round him and Iimplored him by his love for me and by all that he held dear to holdnothing from me, and to tell me why this huge man overshadowed him so."He told me, and my own heart grew cold as ice as I listened. Mypoor Gennaro, in his wild and fiery days, when all the world seemedagainst him and his mind was driven half mad by the injustices oflife, had joined a Neapolitan society, the Red Circle, which wasallied to the old Carbonari. The oaths and secrets of this brotherhoodwere frightful, but once within its rule no escape was possible. When we had fled to America Gennaro thought that he had cast it alloff forever. What was his horror one evening to meet in the streetsthe very man who had initiated him in Naples, the giant Gorgiano, aman who had earned the name of 'Death' in the south of Italy, for hewas red to the elbow in murder! He had come to New York to avoid theItalian police, and he had already planted a branch of this dreadfulsociety in his new home. All this Gennaro told me and showed me asummons which he had received that very day, a Red Circle drawn uponthe head of it telling him that a lodge would be held upon a certaindate, and that his presence at it was required and ordered."That was bad enough, but worse was to come. I had noticed forsome time that when Gorgiano came to us, as he constantly did, inthe evening, he spoke much to me; and even when his words were to myhusband those terrible, glaring, wildbeast eyes of his were alwaysturned upon me. One night his secret came out. I had awakened whathe called 'love' within him- the love of a brute- a savage. Gennarohad not yet returned when he came. He pushed his way in, seized mein his mighty arms, hugged me in his bear's embrace, covered me withkisses, and implored me to come away with him. I was struggling andscreaming when Gennaro entered and attacked him. He struck Gennarosenseless and fled from the house which he was never more to enter. Itwas a deadly enemy that we made that night.
4. "And am I to remain here?"
5. "Madame," I said, "your husband loves you dearly. He is deeplygrieved at this happening."
6. "My name," said he, "is John Openshaw, but my own affairshave, as far as I can understand, little to do with this awfulbusiness. It is a hereditary matter; so in order to give you anidea of the facts, I must go back to the commencement of theaffair.

3. He mused over it for a minute.
4、 My humble name and title did not appear to impress Mr. CulvertonSmith. Through the half-open door I heard a high, petulant, penetrating voice.

{ "There was nothing more I could do, and I spent an uneasy nightturning the matter over in my mind and trying to find some theorywhich would cover the facts. Next day I found the colonel rathermore conciliatory, and as his wife remarked that there were someplaces of interest in the neighbourhood, it gave me an opening toask whether my presence for one more night would incommode them. Asomewhat grudging acquiescence from the old man gave me a clear day inwhich to make my observations. I was already perfectly convincedthat Godfrey was in hiding somewhere near, but where and whyremained to be solved.

"I think you want a little unofficial help. Three undetected murdersin one year won't do, Lestrade. But you handled the Molesey Mysterywith less than your usual- that's to say, you handled it fairly well."We had all risen to our feet, our prisoner breathing hard, with astalwart constable on each side of him. Already a few loiterers hadbegun to collect in the street. Holmes stepped up to the window, closed it, and dropped the blinds. Lestrade had produced twocandles, and the policemen had uncovered their lanterns. I was able atlast to have a good look at our prisoner.
