2. "There was a period of excitement upon August 26th. We will assumethat he is a little hazy as to what he does at such times. If weinsist that we are there by appointment I think he will hardly ventureto contradict us. Have you the effrontery necessary to put itthrough?"
3. "Served in India, I see."
4. "`Neither my son nor I want anything from Jonas Oldacre, dead oralive!' she cried, with a proper spirit. `There is a God in heaven,Ah, Holmes, and that same God who has punished that wicked man willshow, in His own good time, that my son's hands are guiltless of hisblood.'

6. "There is one door from the outside. There is another which leads upby a stair to the passage in which Lady Beatrice's room is situated.""These are deep waters, Mr. Mason; deep and rather dirty. You saythat Sir Robert was not at home last night?"

1. "Well" said the inspector with a grave and thoughtful face, "whoeverhe may have been, and whatever he may have wanted, he's gone for thepresent and we have more immediate things to attend to. Now, Mr.Holmes, with your permission, I will show you round the house."The various bedrooms and sitting-rooms had yielded nothing to acareful search. Apparently the tenants had brought little or nothingwith them, and all the furniture down to the smallest detail hadbeen taken over with the house. A good deal of clothing with the stampof Marx and Co., High Holborn, had been left behind. Telegraphicinquiries had been already made which showed that Marx knew nothing ofhis customer save that he was a good payer. Odds and ends, some pipes,a few novels, two of them in Spanish, an old-fashioned pinfirerevolver, and a guitar were among the personal property."Nothing in all this" said Baynes, stalking, candle in hand, fromroom to room. "But now, Mr. Holmes, I invite your attention to thekitchen."
2. "I congratulate you."
3. "Why?"
4. "And why?"
5. "It so happens that I did," I answered with some pride. "Itchanced to be my old school number, thirty-one, and so is stuck inmy head."
6. "No, I fancy Chiswick is an address which is more likely to findhim. If you will come with me to Chiswick to-night, Lestrade, I'llpromise to go to the Italian Quarter with you to-morrow, and no harmwill be done by the delay. And now I think that a few hours' sleepwould do us all good, for I do not propose to leave before eleveno'clock, and it is unlikely that we shall be back before morning. You'll dine with us, Lestrade, and then you are welcome to the sofauntil it is time for us to start. In the meantime, Watson, I should beglad if you would ring for an express messenger, for I have a letterto send and it is important that it should go at once."Holmes spent the evening in rummaging among the files of the olddaily papers with which one of our lumber-rooms was packed. When atlast he descended, it was with triumph in his eyes, but he saidnothing to either of us as to the result of his researches. For my ownpart, I had followed step by step the methods by which he had tracedthe various windings of this complex case, and, though I could not yetperceive the goal which we would reach, I understood clearly thatHolmes expected this grotesque criminal to make an attempt upon thetwo remaining busts, one of which, I remembered, was at Chiswick. Nodoubt the object of our journey was to catch him in the very act,and I could not but admire the cunning with which my friend hadinserted a wrong clue in the evening paper, so as to give the fellowthe idea that he could continue his scheme with impunity. I was notsurprised when Holmes suggested that I should take my revolver withme. He had himself picked up the loaded hunting-crop, which was hisfavourite weapon.

1. "Oh, I am weary of questions!" cried Miss Cushing impatiently."You have two sisters, I believe."
2. "Adelbert is no coward. His worst enemy couldn't say that of him. Hecan look after himself. There's a burglar alarm at night. Besides, what is there for a burglar- unless they got away with all thisfancy crockery?"
3. "He will live," said I.
4. "Nothing at all."
5. "I don't think we shall find him in the directory. Honest businessmen don't conceal their place of business. Well, you will let meknow any fresh development. I have taken up your case, and you mayrely upon it that I shall see it through."
6. "Nothing."

1. "My name is not unfamiliar to you, Mr. Holmes," said she. "I thoughtthat it would bring you."
2. "Sorry, Mr. Holmes, but that's the law."
3. "The vanishing of the lady."
4、 "'Almost immediately after you left.'
5、 My humble name and title did not appear to impress Mr. CulvertonSmith. Through the half-open door I heard a high, petulant, penetrating voice.

"Then our friend Overton's forebodings have been justified," saidHolmes. "Personally I am in agreement with Dr. Armstrong, and footballdoes not come within my horizon. Early to bed to-night, Watson, forI foresee that to-morrow may be an eventful day."

We had reached our house in Baker Street while we had beentalking. Holmes ascended the stair first, and as he opened the door ofour room he gave a start of surprise. Looking over his shoulder, I wasequally astonished. His brother Mycroft was sitting smoking in thearmchair.

{ Holmes held up a crumpled branch of flowering gorse. To my horrorI perceived that the yellow blossoms were all dabbled with crimson. Onthe path, too, and among the heather were dark stains of clottedblood.

"Quite simple, my dear Watson. But let us get down to what ispractical. I must admit to you that the case, which seemed to me to beso absurdly simple as to be hardly worth my notice, is rapidlyassuming a very different aspect. It is true that though in yourmission you have missed everything of importance, yet even thosethings which have obtruded themselves upon your notice give rise toserious thought."

It was my old housekeeper who heard of it first by that strangewireless by which such people collect the news of the countryside."Sad story this, sir, about Mr. McPherson's dog," said she oneevening.
